3 Legged Buffalo Buffalo Nickel Error
The 1937 D 3 Legged Buffalo Nickel is the most coveted error to be found in the Buffalo Nickel series. Be sure to buy certified to avoid error fakes that have been created by simply polishing down the front leg. MS-65 versions of this coin are worth between $12,000 and $20,000 based on previous sales. Occasionally you can get lucky and pick up a low grade 1937 D 3 Leg for $600 but not a certified one. We suggest you only buy and sell certified as stated above.
The Denver mints 3 Legs Buffalo Nickel is said to be caused by excessive polishing of their coin dies. Denver in an attempt to keep their coins looking amazing, inadvertently created what might be the coolest coin error ever, the 3 Legged Buffalo.
As you can see in the attached example the front leg of the buffalo is missing, the last 3 legs look just fine, but that front leg...poof nowhere to be seen.
