1971 was the year the United States mint switched from 40% silver planchets to planchets with a copper core and outer nickel shell.
There are instances of 1971 Silver Half Dollars being accidentally created and released into the public money supply. Leftover silver planchets sitting at the bottom of bins were included mixed with the modern copper nickel half dollars and fed into minting machines. The dies then struck these coins and they are somewhere out there in circulation.
