1878 was the first year Morgan Silver Dollars were issued. On the reverse you will find various numbers of tail feathers. There are some specimens with 7, some with 8, and some restrikes with 7 over 8.
The first 750,000 struck were high relief and had 8 tail feathers. Henry Linderman the mints director ordered new dies with 7 feathers. All other eagles on coins prior to this had only 7 feathers. In addition he also lowered the relief.
What this means is that 8 feathered 1878 Morgan Silver Dollars should by default have better detail due to the higher relief than the 7 feathers. This should be accounted for when determining the coins condition. Condition should be based on the original mint state.
